About the Course
This recorded training is designed for Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 teachers and TAs and is delivered across three modules (3 hours in total). The training focuses on supporting pupils with gaps in phonic knowledge and skills, ensuring they receive rapid, effective intervention to help them catch up with their peers. Without targeted support, struggling readers can develop anxiety and low self-esteem. This session prioritises early, purposeful intervention so pupils master the alphabetic code and go on to become confident, fluent readers and writers. The training also reflects Ofsted’s focus on pupils who are reading below age-related expectations, exploring how schools can evidence high-quality phonics teaching and effective intervention. Underpinned by strong subject knowledge and sound pedagogy, the session ensures phonics catch-up provision has maximum impact on pupil progress. Module breakdown Module 1 (1 hour 10 minutes) includes: - A revisit of key phonics subject knowledge. (We recommend those new to phonics watch our Phonics Subject Knowledge for Primary recording beforehand.) - Phonics in the context of reading and writing, with a particular focus on fluency. - Practical guidance on organising effective phonics catch-up. - Exploration of assessment in phonics. - Reflection on guidance for supporting pupils with SEND. Modules 2 (50 minutes) and 3 (1 hour) include: - A clear teaching sequence for phonics catch-up, with practical activities to support learning. - Strategies for supporting pupils who find blending challenging. - Guidance on selecting and using age-appropriate resources. This training will leave you feeling confident and supported, with practical approaches you can use straight away to help every child catch up, build confidence, and rediscover the joy of reading.
