Catch Up Phonics for Key Stage 2

This training is aimed at Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 teachers and TAs. Please note that this training is split into 3 modules (3 hours in total) It is imperative that all pupils who have gaps in phonic knowledge/skills are supported to ensure they catch-up with their peers. Without rapid, effective intervention it is common for struggling readers to develop feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem. It is essential that these pupils receive targeted support as a matter of priority so that they master the alphabetic code and go on to become happy and confident readers and writers. We also know that Ofsted pay particular attention to pupils who are reading below age related expectations to assess how well the school is teaching phonics and supporting all children to become confident, fluent readers. This training will ensure that any intervention is based on sound subject knowledge and pedagogy and has maximum impact on pupil progress.  Module 1 (1 hour 10 minutes) includes: - Phonics Subject Knowledge revisit. (We suggest if you are new to phonics that you watch our Phonics Subject Knowledge for Primary Recording beforehand). - Examination of phonics in the context of reading and writing and a note on fluency in particular. - Top tips on the organisation of catch up. - Exploration of assessment for phonics. - Reflection on guidance for teachers who support pupils with SEND. Module 2 (50 minutes) and Module 3  (1 hour) includes: - A teaching sequence for phonics catch up and activities to support teaching and learning. - Strategies for supporting pupils who find blending tricky. - Age appropriate resources.
