About the Course

Teaching Assistants make up around 28% of the state-funded school workforce (DfE) and play a vital role in supporting learning. Research shows that when TAs are well trained and deployed effectively, they can have a significant positive impact on pupil engagement and attainment. In particular, the quality of adult–pupil talk is closely linked to the development of independence and improved learning outcomes (EEF). This expert-led online training day  is designed to equip Teaching Assistants with the skills, confidence and strategies needed to maximise their impact in the classroom. The session focuses on developing purposeful interactions that promote independence rather than dependency, particularly in reading and writing. Participants will explore how carefully chosen language, effective questioning and structured discussion can move pupils’ thinking forward and support deeper learning. Drawing on evidence-informed practice, the training will also examine how to use group work more effectively, enabling pupils to engage in high-quality talk and collaboration that strengthens understanding and progress. During this training, participants will: - Learn techniques to develop pupils’ independence in reading and writing - Explore questioning strategies that deepen thinking and learning - Understand how adult language choices impact pupil progress - Develop approaches to improve discussion, interaction and group work This training empowers Teaching Assistants to work with greater purpose and confidence, ensuring their support leads to measurable improvements in pupil outcomes.
