About the Course

This expert-led online training day is designed for Primary English Leaders and  Y2, Y3,Y4,Y5 and Y6 teachers and Teaching Assistants who want to strengthen writing provision and raise outcomes across their school. Ofsted’s Telling the story: the English education subject report highlighted common strengths and weaknesses in English provision nationally, with significant findings relating to the teaching of writing. This training responds to those findings, drawing on the guidance in the writing framework (DfE 2025) and other key research evidence, offering clear, practical guidance to help schools secure effective writing provision with confidence. Developing pupils as writers is complex. While many programmes promise quick gains, evidence shows that high-quality writing outcomes are built on strong pedagogical content knowledge and consistent classroom practice. Drawing on robust research evidence, this training unpicks what really works in the teaching of writing and supports schools to adopt an evidence-informed approach. The day explores the core components of effective writing provision, showing how they fit together to form a coherent ‘writing jigsaw’. Participants will consider both classroom practice and whole-school planning, ensuring writing is taught with purpose, progression and impact. During the training, participants will: - Reflect on effective teaching of transcription, including spelling and handwriting fluency. - Explore the essential role of reading and oracy in successful writing and how to plan for these systematically. - Examine how explicit grammar teaching, focused on linguistic choice rather than terminology alone, improves writing outcomes. - Develop confidence in Shared Writing and effective modelling of the writing process. - Consider purposeful planning for writing, ensuring teaching sequences lead to authentic outcomes. - Explore how mini-lessons can address misconceptions and teach key building blocks - Reflect on pupils’ writing journeys and the importance of long-term, strategic planning. This day will ensure that the teaching and learning of writing in your school reflects sound evidence-based research, resulting in the very best provision and outcomes for all pupils.
