About the Course
This recorded whole-school training is designed for all primary teachers, Teaching Assistants and English Leaders who want to teach grammar with confidence, clarity and consistency. Please allow approximately 2 hours to complete this training. The Ofsted School Inspection Handbook is clear: “Teachers have expert knowledge of the subjects that they teach. If they do not, they are supported to address gaps in their knowledge so that pupils are not disadvantaged by ineffective teaching.” Yet many primary teachers — including English specialists — were never explicitly taught grammar during their own education. This can lead to uncertainty when explaining grammar concepts, inconsistent use of terminology across year groups and lack of confidence during Shared Writing and text analysis. This course is designed to address those gaps directly, ensuring all staff develop secure grammar subject knowledge and a shared language for teaching grammar across the school. By the end of this training, teachers and TAs will have: - Secure confidence in word classification, understanding how words function within sentences. - A deep understanding of phrases, clauses and sentence construction, including multi-clause sentences. - Confidence in using all Primary National Curriculum grammar terminology accurately and consistently. - Improved clarity when explaining grammar to pupils, analysing grammatical features in texts and modelling writing during Shared Writing. - Greater consistency in grammar language and expectations across classes and year groups. What this course covers - Word classes and grammatical function. - Phrases and clauses explained in a teacher-friendly way. - Sentence construction and grammatical complexity. - National Curriculum grammar terminology and expectations. - Applying grammar knowledge effectively in: Shared Writing Text analysis Daily classroom explanations The focus is on understanding, not memorisation — enabling staff to teach grammar with authority and purpose.
