About the Course
This half-day training session is designed for Year 2, Y3, Y4 ,Y5 and Y6 teachers and Teaching Assistants who want to raise writing outcomes for boys and reluctant writers. Ofsted highlights that 'where English provision is outstanding, boys achieve as well as girls'. This session explores what that provision looks like in practice and how schools can ensure all pupils are motivated, engaged and able to make strong progress in writing. Drawing on current research and classroom evidence, the training focuses on practical, proven approaches that unlock motivation and purpose. Participants will explore how film and drama can be used strategically to spark imagination, deepen understanding and significantly improve the quality of pupils’ writing. The session balances inspiration with practicality, building confidence in techniques that genuinely make a difference — not quick fixes, but approaches that lead to sustained improvement. In this session, participants will: - Explore practical strategies to engage boys and reluctant writers. - Examine how film can be used effectively to inspire purposeful writing. - Develop confidence using drama techniques that improve writing quality. - Consider key research findings and examples of effective practice. This training equips staff with practical, classroom-ready strategies to ensure boys and reluctant writers can thrive and achieve highly in writing.
