Improving Sentence Construction in Reception and  Primary: Recording

Designed for Primary teachers, Teaching Assistants and Reception teachers, this session is ideal for anyone looking to strengthen sentence construction in their classroom. English Leaders will also find it valuable for developing consistent, high-quality practice across the school. Strong sentence construction underpins successful writing. Drawing on key research evidence including guidance from the Writing Framework (DfE 2025) this session explores how pupils develop control over sentences and how teaching can accelerate progress. A particular focus is placed on the central role of spoken language, showing how purposeful talk supports pupils to rehearse ideas, internalise structures and write with greater clarity and accuracy. The session bridges research and practice, ensuring strategies are practical, realistic and effective. During the session, we will explore: - Why spoken language is fundamental to sentence construction. - Evidence-informed approaches to developing oral and written sentences. - Practical, classroom-ready strategies that improve sentence accuracy, variety and control.
