About the Course

This recorded training is designed for Reception and Year 1 teachers and teaching assistants and focuses on generic best practice, regardless of your school’s chosen SSP. Delivered across three modules (approximately 3 hours 10 minutes), the training builds secure subject knowledge and practical classroom expertise. Effective phonics teaching is rooted in a clear understanding of the English alphabetic code and the skills children need to become successful readers and writers. This training draws on research evidence and proven classroom practice to ensure all pupils are supported to make strong, sustained progress. You will deepen your understanding of how children learn to read, strengthen your confidence in teaching phonics, and develop consistent, high-quality practice that supports all learners, including those who need additional support. What the Training Covers: Module 1 (Please allow 1 hour) In this module we review: - What makes a successful reader? - The Simple View of Reading. - The importance of phonological awareness. - Phonics terminology and subject knowledge recap: Quiz time! Module 2 (Please allow 1 hour) In this module we examine: -Teaching Phonics: Best practice. -A teaching sequence for phonics. What are the essential elements? -Practical strategies to support teaching and learning. Module 3 (Please allow 1 hour 10 minutes) In this module we examine: -A teaching sequence for phonics (continued from Module 2) -Practical strategies to support teaching and learning (continued from Module 2) -Teaching Common Exception Words. -Assessment of pupil progress. -‘Keep up’ support. -Supporting pupils with dyslexia and SEND. -Resources. -Best practice summary. This training equips you with the knowledge, clarity and practical tools to deliver confident, consistent phonics teaching, ensuring every child is supported on their journey to becoming a fluent, successful reader.
