Phonics Subject Knowledge for Primary

This training is essential CPD for teachers and Teaching Assistants supporting developing readers in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and struggling readers in Years 3–6. It is also highly suitable for English and Reading Leads, and anyone involved in phonics teaching and learning. Please allow 1 hour 10 minutes to complete the session. Strong phonics teaching is rooted in secure subject knowledge and a clear understanding of how children learn to read. This session strengthens staff confidence by revisiting the fundamentals of phonics and clarifying the principles that underpin effective teaching and intervention. During this training, you will: - Deepen your phonics subject knowledge. - Clarify key phonics terminology and its accurate use. - Unpick the core principles of phonics teaching and learning, ensuring consistent, high-quality practice across year groups. This training supports a shared understanding of phonics across your school, helping all staff deliver confident, effective teaching that meets the needs of both developing and struggling readers.
