About the course
This recorded training is designed for KS1 and KS2 teachers and Teaching Assistants who want to strengthen reading comprehension and accuracy through a proven, high-impact approach. Recorded CPD | Approx. 1 hour Described in Brooks’ What Works for Literacy Difficulties? as having a “remarkable impact” on reading outcomes, Reciprocal Reading is a structured instructional approach which actively develops pupils' independent reading. Pupils gradually take on the role of the teacher, guiding discussion and monitoring their own understanding. Through explicit modelling and guided practice, pupils learn to apply four key strategies — summarising, questioning, clarifying and predicting — enabling them to engage more deeply with texts and become more independent, reflective readers. This course shows how Reciprocal Reading can be used effectively both as a whole-class teaching approach and as a targeted intervention, making it a powerful tool for raising attainment across KS1 and KS2. In this training, you will: ✔ Understand the principles and research behind Reciprocal Reading. ✔ Learn how to model and teach the four key strategies effectively. ✔ Explore practical ways to use Reciprocal Reading at whole-class level. ✔ See how it can be used as a small-group intervention to accelerate progress. ✔ Gain a bank of classroom-ready strategies to improve comprehension and accuracy. Classroom impact ✔ Improve reading comprehension and accuracy. ✔ Develop pupils’ metacognition and self-monitoring while reading. ✔ Increase pupil engagement and independence. ✔ Raise reading outcomes using an evidence-based approach. This practical, research-informed training supports schools to embed Reciprocal Reading confidently and consistently — helping pupils become thoughtful, strategic readers who truly understand what they read.
