About the Course

This recorded training is designed for Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 teachers and Teaching Assistants who want to improve pupils’ spelling confidence and remove barriers to fluent, effective writing. Please allow approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete this training. Why spelling matters Spelling should be taught explicitly. When pupils lack confidence in spelling, they often pause mid-sentence to think about a word, placing unnecessary strain on working memory. This can interrupt the flow of writing and cause pupils to lose ideas or forget planned content. The Ofsted Research Review Series: English highlights how cognitive overload during writing can negatively impact attainment. By strengthening spelling confidence, pupils are better able to focus on ideas, structure and composition, leading to higher-quality writing. This training shows how purposeful, engaging spelling instruction can significantly support writing outcomes across KS2. What you’ll learn By the end of this training, participants will: ✔ Understand why explicit spelling teaching is essential for writing fluency. ✔ Explore a wide range of practical spelling games and strategies. ✔ Learn how to reduce cognitive load so pupils can focus on writing ideas. ✔ Gain approaches that build spelling confidence and independence. ✔ Leave with strategies that can be used immediately in the classroom. All activities are realistic, engaging and adaptable for different year groups.
