About the Course

This recorded training session is designed for Primary teachers, Headteachers and English Leaders and takes up to 1 hour to complete. A growing number of children experience behavioural or emotional challenges, with 1 in 6 children in England now identified as having a probable mental health condition (NHS). Schools play a vital role in supporting pupils’ wellbeing, and the Primary English curriculum offers a powerful and natural place to do this well. Stories and picture books provide a safe, engaging and meaningful way for children to explore emotions, develop empathy and talk about wellbeing. This training explores how carefully chosen texts can support pupils’ emotional development while strengthening language, comprehension and discussion skills. Drawing on classroom practice and evidence-informed approaches, the session supports staff to use literature confidently and sensitively to open up important conversations and support pupils’ mental health. This session will provide: - High-quality book recommendations to support children’s mental health in the primary classroom. - Practical, age-appropriate activities linked to stories that encourage discussion and reflection around wellbeing. This training equips schools with practical, thoughtful approaches to supporting wellbeing through English, ensuring pupils feel heard, supported and ready to learn.
