About the Course
This expert-led session is designed for KS2 teachers, English Leaders, SENDCos, TAs/LSAs and all staff responsible for supporting struggling readers in Key Stage 2. Supporting older pupils who struggle with reading requires precision, expertise and a strong understanding of how reading develops. This training draws on current research and the science of reading to unpick what effective support looks like in KS2 and why some pupils continue to struggle. The session explores the essential components of successful reading, including phonics for accurate decoding, fluency development and the importance of motivating reluctant readers. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the reading jigsaw and how its elements fit together to enable pupils to make sustained progress. A strong emphasis is placed on assessment and targeted support, helping staff identify gaps in phonic knowledge, decoding and fluency, and use this information to plan effective intervention. The training also examines what high-quality KS2 intervention looks like and why age-appropriate, closely matched texts are critical for developing confidence and independence. This session will: - Explore what successful readers do and the implications of the science of reading. - Develop confidence in assessing reading needs and targeting support effectively. - Clarify what effective intervention looks like in KS2. - Examine the role of closely matched texts in improving decoding and fluency. - Signpost evidence-informed resources and programmes to support teaching.
