About the Course

This recorded training is designed for all KS1 and KS2 teachers, Teaching Assistants and English leaders who want to strengthen pupils’ speaking, listening and thinking skills through a clear, consistent approach to oracy. Oracy underpins success across the curriculum. When pupils can articulate ideas, listen actively and express themselves with confidence, learning deepens and outcomes improve. This course provides a practical, evidence-informed introduction to oracy that can be implemented immediately in classrooms across the school. Ideal as a stand-alone training session, this course also complements our live training day Excellence in Oracy: Harnessing the Power of Talk, offering leaders and staff a shared foundation for embedding high-quality talk throughout the primary phase. Drawing on the work of Voice 21, this training explores oracy as a set of teachable skills — not something pupils simply “pick up”. You will develop a clear understanding of how to explicitly teach oracy so that all children can speak with purpose, listen with intent and engage confidently in classroom talk. In this training, you will: ✔ Gain a clear understanding of the four strands of oracy and how to teach these effectively. ✔ Explore a wide range of practical oracy activities that can be used immediately. ✔ Learn how to explicitly teach speaking and listening skills. ✔ See examples of how oracy can be applied across the curriculum. ✔ Build consistency and confidence in classroom talk across your whole school. Classroom impact ✔ Develop confident, articulate speakers. ✔ Improve pupil engagement, reasoning and collaboration. ✔ Support inclusive classroom talk for all learners. ✔ Embed oracy as a tool for learning. This training supports schools to place talk at the heart of teaching and learning, ensuring pupils develop the communication skills they need for academic success — and for life beyond the classroom.
